Jake Visits Pittsburgh

Things are great out here in Pittsburgh. I arrived shortly before Thanksgiving at your brother's house and he and Kristen welcomed me with open arms. We had a nice meal of perogis, a potato filled ravioli, a local Pittsburgh delicacy. After that your brother took me straight to the drilling rig with him to work. I guess you have to earn your meals in this family! The rig was very loud and was located on a massive drilling site. Oil and gas has become a huge industry out here in Pittsburgh. They are drilling in these formations called the Marcellus and Utica Shales, finding gas to heat our homes.

When we got back to Pittsburgh we went into the city to watch their NFL team, the Steelers play the Indianapolis Colts. Pittsburgh has a long history of providing steel for the whole country, thus the name the Steelers. There are still many steel mills in the area, but the industry had declined a lot since it's peak back in the 40's and 50's. Your brother lives in a house that was built by US steel to house workers for their mill.

Pittsburgh is quickly becoming a large technology hub, with companies such as Google, Uber and Amazon having offices in the city. Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh have some of the best computer science programs around, and graduates often find jobs working for one of those tech giants.

The city is founded at the crossroads of 3 rivers, The Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio. There are often barges carrying coal and other goods up and down these rivers. The Ohio eventually flows into the Mississippi River and the the Gulf of Mexico. The rivers played a huge role in helping stimulate trade back in the frontier days of our country. There are over 20 bridges in Pittsburgh to help the locals travel across the river. This is also a great example of the steel industry at work.

I have also visited Ohio and West Virginia, as they are so close to Pittsburgh. There are some beautiful mountains in West Virginia, and it is known as the Mountaineer State. They mountains are not as large as the ones back home in New Hampshire but they are amazing in their own way.

I hope you are doing well back at home. I am off to see your sister in San Francisco!

Your Friend,
Jake
