Chesnut Says South Carolina is Awesome

Hi Abby....
Today we went to several places in South Carolina. There is so much to see here so only 2 highlights. In Charleston there is a display of the H. L. Hunley. It was the first successful combat submarine. During the war between the states, the south developed several hand driven submarines but the Hunley was the most successful. It operated off Charleston near Fort Sumter which was guards the inlet from the ocean at Charleston. The men drove the Hunley out to near the fort and sunk the USS Housatonic, a war ship from the north. The Hunley disappeared that night (1864) and was not found until 1995. All the crew was found inside sitting at their stations. It is still not known why is sunk.

We also went to see the memorial to the Tuskegee Airmen. They were a group of Afro-American pilots who flew during WWII and guarded bombers while they dropped their bombs. This group were very good at what they did and helped saved a lot of lives. Their last training point before going to Europe was at Waltersboro, SC. Wow, this was special.

That's it for today.
Tomorrow, Georgia.
