Chestnut Visits the Tar Heel State

Hi Abby...
I am on the move again. Today Aunt Ellie and Uncle Ron took me to North Carolina also know as the "Tar Heel" State. It got its name many years ago when the settlers made tar, pitch and turpentine from pine trees. When the workers stepped in the tar their shoes got black, thus tar heels. I also learned that the Wright Brothers flew their first plane in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, a long way from where we were. We stopped in Statesville for lunch. It is the home of Mitchell Community College a small college started in the 1800s by religious groups. Today it is a public college. NASA named it a participant in the University Student Launch Challange because of it's engineering curriculum. Quite an honor for a small community college.

I was also told the State Bird is the Cardinal (Aunt Ellie's favorite) and the State Flower is the Dogwood. Uncle Ron has several of these trees in his garden back in Virginia. Sorry there are no pictures. For some reason we were not able to send them. Will try again latter.

Tomorrow on to South Carolina. I am told there is even more to see. Time for bed. Sleep well.
