Well, after a long plane ride and a visit to Illinois and Missouri with Trey, Danielle and Mason I am back in Virginia with Aunt Ellie and Uncle Ron. Yesterday Aunt Ellie was doing some volunteer work so Uncle Ron and I decided to go on a road trip. We started in Martinsburg, West Virginia and saw many historic houses. We tried to get to see an historic railroad round house but is was closed for the season. Uncle Ron says that is where they would keep the engines and do repair work on them. We got a picture of it through the woods.
Martinsburg was a very important train stop for the Confederate Army as it boarders it on Maryland. West Virginia was originally part of Virginia but the area we now call West Virginia pulled away from Virginia for political reasons. The state is also known for West Virginia University. The University is known for it's sports teams especially the football team. The father of Colt's Quarterback Andrew Luck is the Athletic Director. More importantly, it is known for it's medical school. I found out that your cousin Greg graduated from there and is practicing medicine in Winchester, VA.
After we spent some time in West Virginia we crossed over the Potomac River (which goes all the way to Washington, DC) and stopped at the C and O Canal historic lock. The canal brought good, coal and passengers from western Maryland all the way to the eastern part of the state. It was over 180 miles long. The barges were pulled by mules all the way. The mules walked on a narrow path next to the canal pulling the barges on a long rope. We couldn't find any postcards so I picked up some brochures and mailed them to you. What a day. Very tired. Uncle Ron says next week we are going to Hershey, PA where they make chocolate bars (Yum Yum). Need to get some rest.
